What Changed About Medical Debt on Credit Reports

Many consumers believe federal regulations permanently shield credit scores from medical debt collections. As of August 2026, the binding federal legal position has changed.

On July 11, 2025, a federal court vacated the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's rule in Cornerstone Credit Union League v. CFPB. The vacated rule would have prohibited reporting agencies from including medical debt.

What remains in place is voluntary credit bureau policy, not binding court-enforced federal law. Voluntary bureau practices can be modified without congressional approval or administrative rulemaking.
